Summer on Ice Premieres this August
The public is invited to share in a fun-filled afternoon celebrating and discovering
craft beverages and artisan foods from the Finger Lakes.
(Finger Lakes, NY) A new festival has sprung up from the craft beverage industry in the Finger Lakes, and will be making its debut this summer. Summer on Ice is an innovative craft beverage festival that will showcase ice-style wines along with the many other craft beverages and beers from the Finger Lakes Region of New York. The festival will be held Sunday, August 16, on the beautiful grounds of Standing Stone Vineyards overlooking Seneca Lake.
“This is not another wine festival. Nor is it another ice wine festival,” describes Marti Macinski, owner of Standing Stone and co-creator of the event. “This festival is meant to give attendees the opportunity to try the many amazing and unique craft beverages that are being created in the Finger Lakes – right now! Ice-style wines, craft beers and ciders, craft spirits and fun will be the centerpiece of this event.”
The festival, which will run from noon until 5:00pm in its first year, will feature tastings from many craft beverage makers including the ice-style wines of the two founding wineries, Standing Stone Vineyards and Wagner Vineyards.
“This event is the culmination of discussions that we’ve been having for the past few years about helping people understand that ice wines don’t have to be made in the pre-dawn hours in dead of winter and then displayed at well – snooty – events to be good,” explains Macinski. “Winery folks need to lighten up and let people discover for themselves the value and deliciousness of ice-style wines. They are easy to drink, easy to mix and easy to serve with a wide variety of food. While traditional ice wines are extremely limited in quantity, and therefore extremely pricey and inaccessible, the ice-style wines are pure fun! And that’s exactly the point we wanted to convey when we came up with this concept.”
Katie Roller, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Wagner Vineyards, agrees. “As a pioneer of the Finger Lakes wine industry, Wagner Vineyards is proud to be among the leaders once again with our advanced approach and dedication to producing high quality ice-style wines and showing consumers how these types of wines can be utilized in many different ways.”
The festival committee made the decision to open up the event to envelop and showcase the entire craft beverage industry that is burgeoning in the Finger Lakes. Said Brian A. McKenzie of Finger Lakes Distilling, “As the first stand-alone distillery located in the Finger Lakes, we are proud to produce only the finest spirits. At Finger Lakes Distilling, everything is distilled from scratch, in small batches, without any shortcuts. We are delighted to be part of this ground-breaking festival that showcases the unique and quality beverages that are readily available and just waiting to be discovered.”
Craft cocktails will be prepared by top mixologists Jason Scarbrough and Matthew William of Hand & Foot of Corning, NY during the 1:10 demonstration. Popular Finger Lakes Chef Brud Holland, owner of Finger Lakes Made, will lead the Cooking with Craft Beverages cooking demonstration at 3:20pm.
There will also be purveyors of cheese and other local, artisanal foods on hand, providing tastings and pairings with non-traditional ice wines and craft beverages. Music for the event will be performed by the popular local jazz band, Maplewood Jazz Team.
Tickets for the event are $30 a person in advance at www.summeronice.com, or $35 at the door. The ticket price includes all festival activities. However, individual purchases of craft beverages and artisanal foods are not included. More updates and information festival will be released over the next several weeks.
